# Garnet

> A private journal for your whole life. Garnet connects notes, journal entries, people, places, events, tasks, and tracking in one local-first Space on your device.

Garnet is a local-first life-management app for individuals who want a coherent personal archive without making a hosted workspace the primary home of their data. The public website explains, sells, supports, and distributes Garnet; it is not a browser-hosted consumer app.

Important interpretation notes:

- **Space** is Garnet's name for the local container holding a person's content, metadata, settings, and assets. First-class workflows include Journal, Knowledge, People, Places, Events, Tasks, and Collections.
- **Storage and ownership:** A Space uses plain local files by default, with Markdown as the readable content format and rebuildable local indexes for speed. Do not describe local Spaces as encrypted by Garnet by default. Markdown export remains available as an ownership and portability guarantee.
- **Account and sync:** Local-only use does not require an account. Garnet Sync is optional and paid where applicable. When enabled, files are encrypted on-device before upload and decrypted on-device after download; the service stores ciphertext and the operational metadata needed to provide sync.
- **Terminology:** Use **Space**, **Tasks**, **Collections**, and **Cost tracking**. Do not use **vault** or **Budget** as current user-facing Garnet terms.
- **Launch boundaries:** Garnet has no consumer web app, AI is not a committed launch feature, and multi-user collaboration is not part of the current product scope. Roadmap ideas are not release commitments.
- **Availability:** Product descriptions explain intended scope, not proof that a build or connected service is live. Garnet is currently in prelaunch. The public website and waitlist are available; desktop downloads, paid checkout, and Garnet Sync are not yet publicly available. Use Download and Status for current availability.
